Exhibition of Kurume Kasuri Works by Shoji Yamamura and his disciples

With over 200 years of history, the sophisticated skills developed for making Kurume Kasuri, traditional dyed fabric items originating in the Kurume region, have been designated as a national intangible cultural asset in Japan. This exhibition displays kimono cloth, Western clothes, happi coats for the Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival (a renowned festival held every summer in the Hakata ward of Fukuoka City) and other award-winning works.

Wood and Lacquer – Exhibition of Traditional Craftworks

Venue Takumi(Art & Craft) Gallery

An exhibition of traditional Japanese craftworks, including wooden lacquerware, Wajima sunken gold decoration, and moriage raised decoration with shell powder, a tradition with over 1,200 years of history. Burnished lacquerware with beautiful wood grain, jewelry boxes decorated with artistic sunken gold lines, and accessory cases created using the moriage technique are on display and sale.

Koishiwara ware is characterized by a range of traditional decorative techniques, including tobikanna (chatter marking) and hakeme (brush marking). While this pottery boasts over 350 years of tradition, it is also open to new challenges and techniques to suit modern lifestyles. Enjoy the craftsmen’s pursuit of functional beauty in these fine folk crafts.

Agano Ware - Exhibition of Soothing Light and Shadow

An exhibition of lampshades made with the traditional skills of Agano ware craftsmen. The meticulous openwork carving on the lampshades, including designs reminiscent of abstract art or falling cherry blossom petals, is worth seeing. Please come and enjoy this magical world created by light and shadow.
