Bringing you fantastic Fukuoka through the eyes of foreigners living in the Prefecture and the fun places they want their family and friends from throughout the world to come and visit.

Ukiha & Asakura Area

Today, we introduce an agricultural region in the mid-reaches of the Chikugo River, Kyushu’s largest Class A river. With spectacular natural surroundings and a fascinating history, this attractive area is blessed with fertile soil from the Chikugo River, making it a productive agricultural region. Here, you will also find the town of Yoshii, which flourished as a post town during the Edo period (1603 – 1868), as well as Harazuru Onsen, a hot spring resort with baths known for their therapeutic properties.

Take a stroll around the streets of Yoshii

Whitewash plastered walls and heavy tiled rooves. The streets are lined with typical Japanese houses and makes for a beautiful uniform feeling. The building in the photo has a sign at the entrance saying “Kawaya” – it is actually a toilet. And what a grand toilet it is! As you stroll through the town you will see “Kote-e” pictures, of turtles and pine trees drawn using trowels and plaster on the white walls. This is a traditional classic Japanese art technique passed down through the ages. You will also find statues of the mythical “Kappa” creature which is said to live in the waterways of the Chikugo river. Each has its own funny expression. Is this photo a married Kappa couple?

Hayashi Fertilizer Store

Inside this store which sells fertilizer to farmers in Yoshi Town we discovered this classic three-wheeled truck. This Daihatsu-made truck was first registered in 1963, and it is very rare to see this classic model these days. This store uses quaint signs and posters with no Romanized alphabet letters in them, but all vertical Japanese writing. Cool indeed.

Riverwild Ham Factory

You would never have imagined this. In the middle of the farmland is a hidden spot. It is a pig farm with a ham factory and a café, known only to a few. Inside you see posters of rock stars and hear cool music. The gap between the image of a pork farm and the reality makes this place rock. Select a sausage to make a hot dog that suits your taste.

“Ukai,” or cormorant fishing, is a unique method of catching freshwater fish, such as ayu (sweetfish). Here, trained cormorants are used to catch fish that are lured towards burning torches on a boat. To coincide with the opening of the fishing season, in May every year the Ukai season begins on the Chikugo River at Harazuru Hot Springs, and you can watch from the popular yakata-bune boat which carries tourists.
