The “Hakata Gion Yamakasa” has been designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. The costumes worn by the festival bearers feature Kurume Kasuri and Hakata-ori textiles, highlighting the deep connection between the Yamakasa and traditional crafts. This special exhibition showcases the crafts, costumes, and display panels that adorn the Yamakasa, introducing the dedication of the bearers and skilled traditional artisans through these items in both English and Japanese. We also plan to hold workshops that will be enjoyable for both Japanese and international visitors. Please invite your friends and family and come visit us.

ユネスコ世界文化遺産に登録された「博多祇園山笠」。祭りの担い手が纏う装束には久留米絣や博多織が使われており、山笠と伝統工芸品は深い関わりがあります。本企画展は山笠を飾る工芸品や衣装、パネルを展示し、それらを通して担い手や熟練の伝統工芸士のこだわりを英語・日本語で紹介します。日本の方はもちろん、海外の方も楽しめるワークショップも開催予定。お誘い合わせの上、ぜひご来場ください。

About Hakata Gion Yamakasa
博多祇園山笠とは
Hakata Gion Yamakasa is the famous festival of Hakata with a history and tradition of more than 780 years, dating back to the Kamakura period(1185-1333). It is a Shinto ritual to dedicate Yamakasa, the chief deity of Hakata, to Kushida Shrine and to pray for good health and well-being, and is designated as a nationally importantintangible folk cultural asset. It was also registered as a UNESCO Inhangible Cultural Heritage in 2016. (For more details)
博多祇園山笠は鎌倉時代（1185-1333）に始まり、780年以上の歴史と伝統を誇る博多を代表するお祭りです。博多の総鎮守・櫛田神社に山笠を奉納し無病息災を願う神事で、国指定重要無形民俗文化財に指定されています。また、2016年にはユネスコ無形文化遺産にも登録されました。

Traditional crafts actually used in Hakata Gion Yamakasa will be exhibited. In addition, we are pleased to present a selection of Hakata dolls created for Hakata Gion Yamakasa 2025. Also, we will exhibit Nationally designated Traditional Crafts and Fukuoka Prefecture designated Crafts.
博多祇園山笠で実際に用いられた伝統工芸品を展示。2025年の山笠で制作された飾り人形の一部の展示や山笠に関連する国指定伝統的工芸品・福岡県特産民工芸品も紹介します。
DEMONSTRATION/実演

On weekends and public holidays during the exhibition, master artisans will give live demonstrations at the gallery. Visitors can observe the crafting process while listening to explanations from the artisans. Visitors may also can experience the crafting process themselves.(interpretation available)
会期中の土日祝、伝統工芸の職人が来場し、会場で作品づくりを行います。職人の説明を聞きながら、実際の製作の様子を見ることができ、希望者にはその場で工程の一部を体験することができます。
