【Special Exhibition】Sumo Culture and Artisanal Crafts
- Handwoven Hakata-ori: "Kesho-mawashi"
Hirokuni Ono is the only artisan in Japan who handweaves Hakata-ori kesho-mawashi. We are pleased to present a special exhibition of the kesho-mawashi crafted by Mr. Ono for sumo wrestler Kaiō (now Coach Asakayama). The exceptional craftsmanship is on display here — why not come and take a look?
- Hakata Dolls: "One-of-a-Kind Sumo Wrestler Figurine"
We are exhibiting numerous masterpieces of Hakata dolls, including the "Legend Matches" series — which recreates the intense battles of sumo wrestlers — as well as a scene of a Yokozuna's ring entrance.
- Kyushu Tournament Commemorative Exhibition
The Fighting Spirit Award trophy and a replica of a commendation certificate made of Yame-washi are also on display. In addition, you can watch a video introducing the Kyushu Tournament.
- Photo Gallery of Sumo Culture
We will showcase photographs of unique sumo events held in Fukuoka Prefecture, and the "48 Sumo Techniques" depicted by Hakata dolls.
- Demonstrations & Workshops
Watch live demonstrations of lantern making, Hakata doll making, Yame-washi papermaking, and Hakata-ori, each followed by a small-group, hands-on workshop.
- Experience the excitement of sumo and the skill of local artisans up close
To coincide with the November Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament, Takumi Gallery will host a special exhibition showcasing the attractiveness of sumo and the traditional crafts associated with it. Let's discover the world of Fukuoka's traditional crafts through live demonstrations and workshops that highlight the skills of local artisans.
