Cool Fukuoka

CoolFukuoka

Bringing you fantastic Fukuoka through the eyes of foreigners living in the Prefecture and the fun places they want their family and friends from throughout the world to come and visit.

Itoshima Area

Itoshima City is located on the Itoshima Penninsula in the western part of Fukuoka Prefecture. Taking just under one hour by car from the center of Fukuoka City, you can enjoy Itoshima’s rich scenic nature with the coastline along the Genkai Sea and the Sefuri Mountain Range. In addition to the leisure activities of swimming, surfing and hiking, driving around the historic ruins and cultural assets is also popular. The “Itoshima Brand” has also come to represent delicious ingredients for local cuisine, and you can buy local seafood or farm produce direct from the producer. In addition, Itoshima has become a base for artists and their workshops. Why not drop by one of those art studios or gaze at the ocean while enjoying the menu at one of the many cafes and restaurants. There are just so many fun things to see and do.

Mataichi Salt – Saltworks “Kobo Tottan”

Take a drive along the coastline on the western side of the Itoshima Peninsular. The paved road ends and becomes a dirt road, which takes you to the saltworks. This place makes one of the most famous Itoshima brand items - Mataichi Salt. The Kobo Tottan (“on the tip” in Japanese), located on the tip of the Itoshima Penninsula as the name suggests, conducts the total process from manufacturing to sale. Seawater from the Itoshima Peninsular sea is pumped up to a vertical saltpan structure and is circulated through bamboo pipes to increase concentration. It is then simmered in a wood-fired kiln till crystalized. It is a labor intensive and time consuming process to make the natural sea salt. Sprinkle the salt crystals on the Hanashio Pudding, and it tastes even better as you enjoy it while taking in the view of the Genkai Sea.

Anego no Hama Beach (with singing sand)

Along route 202, which hugs the coastline in Nijo area of Itoshima City, you will find an enchanting beach which makes a squeaking sound as you walk along the sand. Although in the past the sands stopped “singing”, an effort to improve the water quality brought back the singing sands. The sound is testament to the purity of the sand. This beautiful beach stretches for about 1km and you can enjoy walking from end to end as the sand sings beneath your feet. The sound is said to be best on a sunny winter’s day.

Oyster Huts

A plastic roof hut at a fishing port seems out of place. This is not for growing crops! Every year for a limited time between late October and about March these Oyster Huts appear in Itoshima. The Huts are complete with tables, which have BBQ hotplates where you can grill or fry yourself. The 4 fishing ports in the city have at least 2 huts each, with one having as many as 13. All huts are affiliated with the Itoshima Fishing Cooperative, so the prices of oysters are the same at all huts. Enjoy time with friends while cooking the freshest oysters yourself at the table –that’s so cool!
